Murder Under a Western Moon by Abigail Keam is the eleventh book in the Mona Moon Mystery series. Mona is excited and about to embark on an epic honeymoon after her incredible wedding to Robert Farley. However, their plans change abruptly when she receives an unfortunate telegram from Rupert Hunt, notifying her of a death that occurred at Moon Mines and where a Blackfoot man is facing possible murder accusations. Her only option is to handle the matter herself which means making a detour to Montana. As she delves into the investigation, she learns that opinions about Moon Enterprises are not too favorable and, eventually, she begins to suspect that Rupert may have an agenda of his own.

Abigail Keam uses the backdrop of the mines to show the historical setting while also creating a social commentary. The plot revolves around the mine and shows the conditions, treatment, and prejudice that prevailed. These details set up Mooncrest Village as dreary and unkempt, giving Mona an in-depth look at what the miners and their families were experiencing. The story features real historical details such as the Indian Reorganization Act and the superstitious fears that European immigrants had toward the Native Americans. You will find a glossary of facts at the end that provides more insight into these various details, including background information on Absaroka, The Synder Act, and Pennsylvania Station.

The dynamic between Mona and Robert adds charm and sweet moments that balance the mystery as Keam has created a lovely relationship between them throughout the series. Humorous moments are threaded in such as Mona referring to Robert as Lord Bob and their lack of proper dress for the Montana winter. Mona is a well-rounded protagonist and leading sleuth with a desire to help the miners, unite the women of Moon Mine, and show compassion to everyone around her. She’s described as a modern freethinker which is a great way to view her. An underlying theme that adds more suspense to the mystery is Rupert, who serves as Mona’s eyes and ears, but who begins to look suspicious as the story progresses. Murder Under a Western Moon is a great foray into historical mysteries and serves as another charming, humorous, and well-written installment of the series.
