Mystery at the Fair (The Jean Hays Series Volume 1) by Connie Cockrell is a murder mystery. Jean Hays, a relative stranger to the area, has been made VP of The Fair Board and it’s her job to make sure the annual Fair goes off properly. Looking in a storage container for ribbons, she stumbles across the corpse of Ina Grange, the local quilting legend, and it looks like she’s been dead a while. Not prepared to sit back and wait for the police to do their job, Jean gets involved and uncovers a deadly conspiracy. Her interference leads to an attack with a clear message for her to get out of town. Jean isn’t going anywhere though; she doesn’t run from a challenge. Can she find out the truth before she gets seriously hurt…or ends up dead?

Mystery at the Fair is the first volume in what looks to be a good series. This is a fast moving story with plenty of goings-on to keep you hooked but, at the same time, it’s an easy read. The plot is decent with lots of action, and it twists and turns neatly in such a way that you simply have to keep on reading just to see where it is going. The characters were very well developed to the point that I felt I knew them personally and could identify with them, particularly the main protagonist. This is a great book for anyone who wants an easy and fun read with plenty of meat on the bones of the story. Looking forward to the next in the series to see what Jean can get herself into next time.
