No Goin' Home by Valerie Allen is a short story that explores divorce and the impact it has on families. Why do people get divorced, and who is to blame? On the day that Clayton Oakley goes to pick up his two sons, he has an unnecessary argument with his ex-wife, Callie. They bicker about his new lover, the damaged porch, and his unavailability. Clayton thinks Callie is just jealous, petty, and acting like a difficult woman, but as he is about to drive off with his kids and new lover, he reflects on his reality. He may have his freedom and time, but at what cost?

No Goin’ Home is a profound story that encourages people to analyze their choices and how these can affect their loved ones. Clayton’s reasons to end his marriage seemed right, but after one encounter with Callie, he realizes his mistakes. There is a big difference between seeking solitude and being selfish. A marriage requires commitment, selflessness, and sacrifice. The book also covers topics like drug abuse and infidelity and how they can destroy relationships. The best lesson in this book is that despite their disagreements, Clayton and Callie teach their children to respect the other parent. I loved that Valerie Allen added a metaphorical connection between their broken relationship and the damaged porch that needs fixing. The detail is subtle, but it perfectly explains the state of Clayton and Callie's relationship. The author creatively uses familiar situations to teach life-changing lessons. The book is well-written and has realistic conversations between the characters. I enjoyed this book and hope to read more from this author.
