Pearls: A Spiritual Journey by Ms. Barbara Lamping is a journaling-prompting devotional. There are 38 “devotionals” which are each broken into 4 parts: a prose story/reflection – usually from the author’s life - a poem written by Lamping, scripture passages to mediate on (with space in the book to write down your conclusions from meditation), and journal questions to answer. While there is space after each question for a brief answer, Ms. Lamping encourages having a separate journal for longer answers. Topics include: salvation story, wisdom through reflection, Passover, loss (dad, husband, son, job), depression, how to move forward, etc.

I really enjoyed reading through Ms. Barbara Lamping’s book, Pearls: A Spiritual Journey. Each of the stories from her life is easy to identify with and the conclusions she draws inspire thought. The poems mostly follow the ABAB rhyming scheme and, while not of the quality of Dickinson or Browning, have a simple and heartfelt quality that makes them very engaging. The scriptures for meditation are well chosen to go with the theme of each section. The questions at the end are GREAT and really brought something out from deep inside me. I also enjoyed the drawing suggestion in each section. Pearls is a very enjoyable and thought-provoking work and I am very glad I went through it.
