It is best suited to mature adult readers owing to scenes of violence and explicit language throughout. Penned by author Kenton E.H. Ward, the adventure follows Tommy Cade, a war hero and golem hunter haunted by a traumatic encounter on the planet Phantom, who is thrust back into a perilous mission that could mean life or death. Coerced by a menacing man named Ward, Tommy faces not only the dangers of the golem hunt but also the racial tensions in a lawless region of the Milky Way. The narrative journey explores Tommy's past trauma in stark contrast to the present danger, creating a suspenseful and emotionally charged adventure across the stars.
Author Kenton E.H. Ward introduces elements of science fiction, psychological thriller, and social commentary to craft a multifaceted and engaging read that stayed with me for a long time after I’d closed the book. Ward's exploration of trauma, identity, and the quest for truth is poignant and well-penned, but it’s also a natural part of the plot rather than an intrusion by the author. The characters live and breathe their difficult decisions, self-reflection, and questioning, making the work not just a thrilling space adventure but also a contemplative journey into the human psyche. The characters are all well-developed, with authentic and uniquely penned dialogue that moves the plot forward through their various emotional struggles. The world-building is also highly immersive and has a great sense of mood. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Phantom Ultra as a compelling and well-penned science fiction work that provides readers with a rich and thought-provoking experience.
