Puppy Love by Valerie Allen is a novella that explores the intricate relationship between a mother and daughter. Veronica does not get along with her opinionated mother, Madeline, and tries her best to ignore her, but this does not work. Madeline does not seem to be pleased with anything Veronica does. Whether it is Veronica's loving marriage to Larry or a work promotion, Madeline still finds something negative to say. Enraged by her mother’s actions, Veronica names a puppy she is giving away, Madeline. This incident turns into an ironic moment that teaches Veronica how some people are meant to be in our lives forever.

Everyone has that one family member whom you cannot stand but still love dearly, and no matter how many times you try, you cannot ignore what they say or do. Valerie Allen presents this reality in the form of a fun and interesting story with relatable and well-developed characters. Puppy Love is a short story, but the author makes the characters easy to understand and visualize, and this is because they are all familiar people you have met in real life. Veronica and Madeline are everyday people who have individual opinions and preferences. Many readers will resonate with them and their dynamic relationship. The book has realistic dialogue, an unpredictable storyline, and a hilarious conclusion. I enjoyed reading this novella because it is unique and memorable, and I recommend it to anyone who loves reading short tales with a dose of reality. This is great work.
