Septan Phase by Hisho Gaited is a rare kind of marvelous literary hallucinogenic mandala, designed to provoke acute flights of imagination while stimulating the full diapason of the senses; in short, it offers a reading experience like no other. The premise in itself is unique and compelling: protagonist Lucas Dionigi, after discovering a hidden natural law, bends it and his reality to suit his every desire. Imagine such a life! Along the way, however, his Elysian alter-reality begins to unravel, leading Lucas to an inevitable pivot point on the life-death continuum. Septan Phase offers the reader a wide and varied menu of flavors to delight and inspire – supernatural occurrences, blistering erotic vignettes, mysterious and eclectic characters, and seemingly infinite plot twists, scattered across several planes and narrated from ever-shifting first-, second-, and third-person points of view, resulting in a universal, otherworldly, and yet completely accessible and oddly familiar tale that touches the heart as it expands the mind. Lucas is a kind of modern-day Everyman, trying to cope with mortality as best he can and searching for strength in myriad places along a wildly unpredictable and absolutely enthralling journey.

Lucas has eminently human frailties: at one point, he is struggling to juggle two women in his life with limited success; at another, he (foolishly?) decides to make all decisions in his life via coin flip but he always triumphs in unforeseeable ways and acquires wisdom in the process. He learns and grows, which makes him eminently worthy of being cared about and paid attention to. The fact that he has discovered a cosmic loophole and found a way to use it to cheat the system has a kind of Faustian appeal, and readers will no doubt become consumed by curiosity, which will keep the pages turning until the breathtaking surprise ending. Septan Phase by Hisho Gaited is a unique and magical literary delight for any reader willing to take the plunge and go on a mind-expanding journey.

In the speculative novel Septan Phase: Pointless Wisdom Before Virgin Minds by Hisho Gaited, book one in the Septan Phase trilogy, the story follows the journey of the main character, Lucas Dionigi, in his world of introspection, relationships, and inner conflicts. Lucas engages in multiple interactions with partners, friends, and colleagues alongside battles with personal insecurities and emotional swings. Moments of pleasure, connection, and existential contemplation are often accompanied by substance use in settings that range from motel encounters to his workplace, and shifting point-of-view narratives. The story takes a darker turn when Lucas's mental state becomes increasingly unstable, culminating in a disturbing encounter with a woman who is marked by his struggle for control.

Septan Phase: Pointless Wisdom Before Virgin Minds by Hisho Gaited is a novel that is more of an artistic exercise than a traditional story and will require a reader with the stomach for drug-fueled, often violent sexual encounters that blur the lines of power, age, and consent. What's interesting about Gaited's approach is that the writing style begins in a first-person stream of consciousness, then moves to turn the narrator directly to the reader in the third person, before returning to second and first again. Doing this pulls the reader into the story in a way I've not experienced before, and it's really well done. I liked the parts where Gaited forces us into alternate perceptions of reality and turns them inward so we are forced to question them ourselves. The writing is imaginative and wildly descriptive, and I have no doubt that those who like exploratory literature will be pleased.

Septan Phase: Pointless Wisdom Before Virgin Minds by Hisho Gaited is a journey into the chaotic and enigmatic mind of Lucas Dionigi. This truly unique and provocative story unfolds over the course of seven days in Lucas's life, during which he experiences a rapid descent into a world of excess, appeasement, and philosophical rumination. Lucas appears to be living a life that many would want, filled with women, drugs, and professional success. However, as the novel unfolds, it becomes clear that his reality is far from the glossy exterior it presents. As we follow Lucas on his tearaway journey, we witness the effects it has on his mental well-being. His discovery of the Septan Phase, a hidden natural law, grants him divine timing in speech, action, and thought. Initially a source of empowerment, it eventually becomes a double-edged sword as it chips away at his sanity.

Hisho Gaited skillfully navigates the narrative of Septan Phase through the ingenious use of multiple perspectives, flowing from first, second, to third person seamlessly. These transitions effectively immerse the reader into Lucas's turbulent psyche shadowing his disoriented and reckless self, allowing us to intimately engage with his experiences. The book takes readers into a whirlwind of emotions, combining moments of darkness with unexpected humor and pleasure. Gaited's writing is compelling and lyrical, characterized by obsessive segments that mirror Lucas's unhinged thought processes. The prose becomes a reflection of the protagonist's mind, highlighting the disorienting and intense nature of his existence. Septan Phase is a raw, visceral inquiry into the human psyche, filled with explicit scenes and unapologetic depictions of Lucas's hedonistic lifestyle. It is a novel that challenges societal norms and invites readers to confront their own desires, prejudices, and judgments.

Hisho Gaited begins the Septan Phase Trilogy with this engaging Volume I, Pointless Wisdom Before Virgin Minds. Lucas Dionigi is a man of many talents. When not indulging himself in bouts of cocaine and liquor-induced binges, he unleashes his creative potential through his writing. After a particularly long sex session with a teacher, Lucas has a night out with friends involving copious amounts of drugs, which leads to him being stabbed and taken to the hospital. Now, at his boss David Solomon's party, Lucas can't help but feel drawn to David's daughter, Faith. However, he sleeps with another woman instead, and not long after, ends up making out with a seventeen-year-old, which he justifies by saying, "She is wiser beyond her years." When he eventually gets a date with Faith, a shocking event occurs that will change his life forever.

For most phases of Pointless Wisdom Before Virgin Minds, the narrative plays out like a feverish dream where you've little idea of your destination or even your path. Hisho Gaited uses a very unorthodox storytelling style where the narrative switches between first, second, and third-person POVs while following the same protagonist until the end. Lucas is not exactly your typical relatable or even likable protagonist. His outlook on women is interesting, to say the least, and he has no qualms about lusting after engaged women or even minors. And yet, his wacky adventures are fascinating to read, and you can't help but wonder what he is up to next. Septan Phase: Volume I isn't for everyone, but if you're someone who likes experimental storytelling styles or unconventional narrative structures in their novels, this one will be right up your alley.
