Six Against the Slow and Steady by Alexander Sun is a modern rendition of the fable, The Hare and the Tortoise. Only this time, instead of one opponent, the hare, the Tortoise (aka Turtle) now has six other opponents in this same race. This children’s book describes not only Turtle, but also shows the attributes of the six competitors: Pig, Fox, Cheetah, Rabbit (aka the Hare), and two hedgehogs named Hedgehog and Echidna. The race starts, and we see how each participant winds up. While many readers, irrespective of nationality and whether an adult or child, are familiar with this tale and its outcome, we readers now see it from a broader perspective. We understand why Turtle has the best attributes to win, even against the other opponents and despite his flaws.

Alexander Sun takes a creative approach to a fable and applies it to modern times in Six Against the Slow and Steady, and also highlights the typical characteristics of the other animals. The author also highlights how these animals’ well-known characteristics can be a disadvantage to them in such a race. He emphasizes such themes as confidence, trickery, arrogance, lack of focus, and conflicts. These themes are important for young children as they start learning life lessons. Finally, Sun draws you in with detailed illustrations of each competitor, making each (regardless of any flaws) endearing to the young reader. I highly recommend this book to everyone, but especially those with small children, and look forward to reading more from this author.
