Author Biography

Α few words about me...

Once upon a time, somewhere in the most beautiful country of the world, Greece, I was born and grew up in a traditional, ordinary family.
Because of my father's work, we used to travel around the country very often so I had the opportunity to meet new people all the time.
The thing that inspired me to create fairy tales was the long conversations I had with all these old and wise people, who I met in my travels.
To be honest, I have not studied to write fairy tales. "The only thing that somebody needs to write a fairy tale is imagination and nobody can teach you about imagination" a little wise girl said once.
I would like to thank all of you, who choose my stories, because I created them with a lot of love. I hope that you are going to hug them like you hug your babies at nights.
I wish your "little monsters" have always sweet dreams..!
Faithfully yours, Katerina Mparma

Tell Me Granny: Tales Distilled and Crafted by a Greek Teller is a children's story written by Katerina Mparmpa and illustrated by Orestis Diamantis. The author grew up in Greece and traveled throughout the country with her family. She learned many traditional Greek tales and fables, which she's now presenting for an English-speaking audience. Tell Me Granny is a story told to a grandmother's small grandson when he's visiting with her. The two of them are sitting on a couch before a wood-burning stove. As they watch the flames flickering and dancing, Granny tells the story of how the earth, water and sky were made. They were once brothers, she explains, who lived together for thousands of years until the sky had an idea.

Katerina Mparmpa's children's fable, Tell Me Granny: Tales Distilled and Crafted by a Greek Teller is hauntingly lovely and magical. The author creates a warm and enticing space in that little room where Granny sits with her grandchild, and the story she tells him had me instantly entranced. Diamantis' illustrations are marvelous! Each panel is richly colored and fits the story-line perfectly. The pictures of the earth, sky and sea changing and adapting to their new roles are imaginative and joyous, and those scenes of Granny and her grandson sitting by the fire are unforgettably poignant. Tell Me Granny reminded me somewhat of some traditional Native American myths, but with its own distinct flair and background. This is a special book for bedtime or a visit with a grandchild. Tell Me Granny: Tales Distilled and Crafted by a Greek Teller is most highly recommended.
