Logan would have loved it if Lilly could talk; however, being a doll, she obviously can’t. That is until the day he unearths a strange watch from the attic that makes his toys come to life. A toy pirate insists that Logan, the powerful wielder of the watch, must rescue Joey the Kangaroo from the clutches of the Pinky Pirate. At first reluctant to involve himself in a perilous journey, Logan nonetheless complies when the promise of the adventure sounds too alluring. Accompanied by Captain Orangebeard and his beloved Lilly, he steps into a magic portal that transports him to a magical world. In The Adventures of Logan & Lilly and The Lost Treasure, Candace Valek narrates the story of Logan’s daring escapade.

This short yet entertaining story filled me with pure delight. When Logan got an opportunity to undertake an exciting quest, I felt I was also a part of his journey. The trio’s adventure took them through many trials involving dangerous situations and curious tasks. The story moved swiftly, all the while keeping readers guessing. The accompanying illustrations brought the book to life. The characters’ facial expressions were so life-like, the pictures so attractive, that I could not decide whether I liked the story more or the illustrations. Also, I loved the inherent message the book conveyed. Valek highlighted that a person, no matter how young or seemingly insignificant, can do wonders if only they have faith in themselves. I would absolutely recommend The Adventures of Logan & Lilly and The Lost Treasure to an audience of 5 to 10 years.

The Adventures of Logan & Lilly and the Lost Treasure by Candace Valek is an amazing and highly imaginative story for children, and even for adults. This tale focuses on Logan and his favorite doll Lilly; he finds a watch that allows his toys to come to life and takes him into incredible adventures with his toys, and of course, with Lilly by his side. This particular tale takes them on a journey with Captain Orangebeard to the Isle of Nowhere to save their friend, kangaroo Joey, who has been kangaroo-napped by the evil Pinky Pirate. With the help of the map and their intelligence, they have to overcome several obstacles throughout the island so they can stop Pinky Pirate and save Joey the kangaroo.

Even though I am an adult now, my inner child enjoyed Candace Valek's story to the fullest. I would have loved to have had these types of stories when I was growing up, to believe that my dolls could come alive and go on an adventure with me; it would have been amazing. I loved the intricacies of the story, and every obstacle was very original and intriguing. I felt that I was in a kids' version of Indiana Jones. I can honestly say that every kid that reads this book will love it and want more adventures with Logan and Lilly. Needless to say, the illustrations are incredible; it is something else to bring a story to life with pictures. I am thrilled to have read The Adventures of Logan & Lilly and the Lost Treasure.

Logan doesn’t like the attic; it’s full of dust bunnies, and it smells as bad as his three-day-old sweaty baseball socks. But, his mom has sent him on an errand to find her jewelry box. For help (and protection), Logan takes along his doll, Lilly. Discovering the jewelry box, Logan is attracted to a flashing light. He pulls out heavy boxes and finds an old watch, a greater treasure than his mom’s jewelry box. Once alone in his bedroom, Logan activates the watch. All kinds of magical things happen, including Lilly actually talking to him, as well as his pirate doll, Captain Orangebeard. There is a mission that only Logan can undertake successfully. Somewhat doubtful of his abilities, Logan goes along, following the pirate captain and Lilly on an adventure to another world called the Isle of Nowhere, a place where toys are alive and spiders, snakes, and treasure abound.

Candace Valek’s middle-grade novel, The Adventures of Logan & Lilly and the Lost Treasure, is the first book in the series. It is a fun read, full of adventure and excitement and lots of imagination. Written in simple language to help the young reader improve their reading skills and accompanied by black and white illustrations, the plot develops with building tension touched with elements of humor. The dialogue is certainly believable for this age group, and the emphasis on the power of one’s imagination is duly stressed. The settings are well described, especially the dusty, smelly attic, where readers will certainly feel like they are experiencing what Logan is experiencing. A very engaging read for the 6-to-9-year-old age group.
