The Awakening is a work of fiction in the supernatural genre. It is aimed at a mature reading audience and was penned by author Udey Adoga. The book follows an ordinary girl named Emily Crane who is working hard to achieve her goal of becoming a teacher. On the night of her twenty-second birthday, Emily is suddenly thrust into the world of demons and demon hunters when she is saved by an occult mercenary named Desmond. As the two fight to escape the dangerous world in which they are trapped, Desmond must confront his past, both in order to get his power back to protect Emily and to get them back to the safety of the real world.
Author Udey Adoga has delivered a deeply engaging supernatural story set within the science fiction and fantasy sub-genre. One of the most enjoyable things about this novel was how well developed and interesting all of the characters were, especially Emily, Desmond, and Aurora, which I felt added depth and emotion to the story because of the connection I felt with them. Adoga is a master at crafting a well-thought-out and well-paced plot that balances the supernatural elements perfectly alongside grounded emotional resonance. The plot never slows, which kept me engaged and involved with the characters, setting, and story from start to finish. What results is a fresh take on the supernatural genre that is packed full of action, and an interesting and diverse cast of characters. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend The Awakening to fans of both science fiction and supernatural stories, and those looking for a read that will have them excited to see what comes next.
