The Becalmer is a young adult sci-fi novel by Nick Wilford. Harica Spindelman is a teenager gifted with the ability to calm others with her mind and uses her powers specifically for conflict resolution in school. But when she is called upon to mediate a royal marriage between Princess Jasmila Camzhargi and Prince Narbert of Narbutsi, Harica faces a challenge unlike any other. She hops off-world for her mission as tensions between the two nations escalate, leading to the deaths of multiple civilians. However, Jasmila has other ideas and soon sends Harica into a coma, where Harica finds others like her in her ethereal form. When Jasmila loses control and tries to kill Narbert, Harica intervenes and takes matters into her own hands. But now, the royalty is attacked by an unforeseen enemy that only Harica can stop.

If you're a fan of superhero stories featuring young adult characters with extraordinary abilities, The Becalmer is the perfect book. Author Nick Wilford crafts a fast-paced plot with enough twists and turns to keep you engaged until the end. Wilford's plotting is crisp and filled with spontaneous action, mystery, and intrigue. Toward the book's halfway point, the tale turns into a sleuth mystery, with the main character, Harica, searching for the roots of her and Jasmila's powers. Wilford has a minimalistic prose style that avoids any fluff or fat in the pages. Harica's friendship with Miriam was one of my favorite aspects of the story. All in all, The Becalmer is an entertaining young adult sci-fi novel.
