The Careless Kitty by Seth Clay is an illustrated children’s story of a loving family – Manny, Beth, and their son Alvin. One day Alvin finds a small mouse lurking behind the curtain in their living room. Beth is exasperated by the havoc created by the mouse and wishes for a cat to get rid of it. Manny and Alvin find a tiny kitten, bring him home and name him Rascal. They take good care of Rascal. Beth feeds and pampers him with utmost care. As time passes, the mouse continues to create havoc in the house. Beth feels upset because she feels Rascal is being lazy and begs that he catch the mouse once and for all. Is he successful in driving the mouse away for good?
Seth Clay has written The Careless Kitty based on his own family’s experience with a lovable pet cat. The story is filled with love and compassion for the pet cat, Rascal. How they find Rascal as a tiny helpless kitten, how he grows into part of the family with their care and affection are valuable lessons for children. The story is relatable, and children can identify with the characters and learn from them. The illustrations are beautiful and capture a wide range of emotions splendidly. I loved how the characters, both human and animal, blend together in the story. It felt warm and cozy to read this book. The Careless Kitty is a beautiful choice for bed-time storytelling.
