The Chest of Visions: New Pathways 'Cross Broken Highways by Tim Ferguson is a breezy read, a story for fans of well-imagined tales and legends. This story begins billions of years ago, at the very moment when the singularity of life was ruptured by a force that defied gravity, creating the Big Bang and a dual universe. The reader is introduced to a world called Caperston, a world that is similar to earth but not quite like earth, and smaller in size. It is here that Mattpaul lives. This world is divided into the Valley and the Mountain peoples. The Mountain people have for too long been considered inferior by the Valley People and, after the death of Mattpaul, a lot takes place. In an epistolary style, the author captures the dynamics of community life, the conflicts, the revolt by the youth, the teachings of Chi-hay-su who defies the ruler, and the discovery of other races.
There is a lot to enjoy in this short and epic fantasy. The first thing I enjoyed is the author's use of the epistolary style, allowing characters to share their thoughts and to describe events as well as their relationships through letters. I also loved how the author makes a link between an event that occurred "in the beginning" to a story taking place in 2017. The characters are memorable and well-explored, the plot filled with surprising twists and intriguing moments. While the story refers to scientific facts like the Big Bang and the evolution of peoples, it stands apart in its originality. The writing is beautiful and the narrative voice exciting. Tim Ferguson writes with confidence and creates a setting that leaves readers with many vivid images in their minds.
