The Price of the Sky is a historical fiction crime drama by William J Fisher. Based on actual events, the book follows the life of Foster Bedford Jones, a young pilot flying airplanes for the Lone Star Flying Circus in the mid-1920s. With a wife named Clara Mae and a young child in tow, Bedford unwittingly becomes embroiled in criminal activities when his older brother Chester recruits his services for a bank robbery. Soon, he finds himself smuggling liquor from Mexico during the prohibition era in the United States. After a bank job goes wrong in Gary, Indiana, Bedford is sentenced to 25 years in prison. Filled with regret and determined to turn his life around, he seeks a second chance, one which will come in the form of Martha Salb.

The Price of the Sky is full of suspense, intrigue, romance, and humor. William J Fisher tells a captivating story about a real-life mercurial man who had constant brushes with the law. This is one of those human interest stories that feel universal and demand your attention no matter what type of reader you are. Fisher keeps the plot moving at an even pace, with a few well-placed twists and turns that keep you on your toes. The characters are well-fleshed-out and have layers to their personalities that make them feel dynamic and compelling. I found Bedford to be a conflicted man who strives to do his best under the circumstances. Overall, this is a fantastic book for historical fiction fans.
