The Spanish Patriot: A Novel by Nicky Penttila is a historical fiction novel that adds a dash of romance into the mix of incredible settings and story. The story begins in 1808 in Corunna, Spain. The Wakefields are an American loyalist refugee family who immigrated to Spain after the Revolutionary War. The family operates the local printing press. Louisa (Lou) works for her father in the shop but hopes to some day write the news. When the British army arrives in support of Spain and in defense of Napoleon's invasion, fireworks ensue. Sam Kerr is a British reporter sent to follow the army and report articles back to London. What follows is a historical and romantic story and gives readers insight into family values and loyalty, along with the newspaper business at the turn of a warring century and the persecution that loyalist families like the Wakefields faced after the Revolutionary War.

This is a beautifully written story that readers will love because it is full of history without being drowned in it. The historical value leaps off the page but coincides with the characters' lives and values. It is a vividly written tale and an exciting read that will appeal to both historical fiction fans and readers who enjoy romantic stories. The characters are exceptionally written and really come alive, giving the reader such a more intensely personal experience.
