The Worst Football Team by Martin Smith is a hilarious book primarily written for children aged 5-8. The book features Lane FC Meerkats U-7s, a team of kids who are better at troublemaking than playing football. Calling them terrible at the sport would be an understatement, but Coach Mark is not ready to give up on the kids. The children do not make it easy for him and the training sessions are always messy. The fact that they train next to the U-15s, a team with a demonic coach, does not help either. Despite all the hurdles, Coach Mark dreams that his team will score a goal one day.

Amusement lies in every line of Martin Smith’s The Worst Football Team. Martin’s brilliant sense of humor made me laugh until I cried, and I believe anyone reading this book will find themself in a similar situation. The entire book is written in extremely short paragraphs, with none of them flowing to the next line. Although the format is unconventional, I think that it can prove to be useful for reluctant readers. While the book is not really didactic in nature, some lessons can be extracted if we pay close attention. I absolutely loved Coach Mark; a good look at this character can indeed help us to learn a thing or two. Being in charge of a horrifying team had not stopped him from pursuing his dream. However, he has no unrealistic expectations; rather he is pleased even with the tiniest bit of progress. Whether or not we are looking for messages, this book is a good pick for both children and adults.
