Written by April Hilland and illustrated by Devika Oza, This Book is Dangerous! is meant to raise awareness in children about the power of reading and cultivating ideas. April Hilland encourages children to dare to dream and challenge the status quo, to ask hard questions, to let curiosity propel them to the why behind things, and then try to improve them through thinking and acting. She explains the importance and benefits of ideas and how powerful they can be. Some people recognize this, and instead of using their power for good and enlightening and encouraging others, they try to eliminate it. This could be through banning books and trying to limit children’s imagination and expression.

I like how the illustrations skillfully included some classic book recommendations that children will enjoy. This certainly caught my eye, with suggestions like Harry Potter, Charlotte’s Web, Narnia, The Hate U Give, etc. Truly, some people are okay with bad things happening because it favors them, so they’ll try to stop anything that will encourage the younger generation to ask questions and seek to implement changes. However, the author addresses parents and educators, in fact, everyone, appealing to us to help children dream and encourage them to want to change the world by enabling them to form ideas and think outside the box. We should encourage young readers to see things from many and varied angles. I highly recommend This Book is Dangerous! by April Hilland to all children, parents, guardians, and educators.
