Wally the Wake-Up Pup by Nicoli Carr is an adorable children’s book about a dedicated pup who eagerly spends the morning waking up his family. Wally takes his job quite seriously. Only he can ensure that the whole family gets out of bed and starts their day. He’s not the Wake-Up Pup for nothing! Starting with the cat, Wally makes his way through the house and doesn’t stop until every member of the family is awake. Not everyone is easy to wake up though. Meg is the hardest one to get out of bed and she even throws her pillow in protest while young Charlie has blocks filling his room like an obstacle course. But this won’t stop Wally!

The illustrations are lively and colorful with a vivid focus on the little details that help bring the scenes to life and maintain playfulness throughout. The humorous visuals showcase the dynamics between Wally and the family in a way that will make it easy for children of all ages to understand. The illustrations show the gentle way that Wally wakes each member, which helps to establish the love he has for them and they for him. The story ends with a delightful twist that adds a magical component. Told from Wally’s perspective, Nicoli Carr ensures that each family member has a sweet moment with Wally that shows each of their different personalities. The determination that Wally has is a perfect example of the attitude, joy, and personality of a dog. Wally the Wake-Up Pup is an energetic tale that will make children laugh and capture their hearts through sweet moments, chaotic humor, and an adorable pup.

Wally the wake-up pup is a boisterous dog with a responsibility. His biggest task is waking everyone up in the morning. He starts his assignment by frightening Wiggles the cat from her favorite blanket, and then they both proceed to every other room, with Wally doing the actual waking up and Wiggles lying around. Mum and Dad make Wally’s job easy; they wake up very easily and warmly cuddle him. But Meg gives Wally a hard time! After Wally wakes the family up, he heads outside to wake up one more special person, and then he goes back into the house to continue his morning. Wally the Wake-up Pup is a lighthearted children's book about a morning in the life of a wake-up dog. Wally’s story demonstrates that everybody can be useful. The story is simple but engaging, and the detailed illustrations by Hv Helmut are captivating. I found the illustrations to be gorgeous, and I believe young readers will find them exciting. The story also contains some advanced words that should challenge its intended audience’s vocabulary. Some of these words are written in artistic fonts that demonstrate the meaning of the word; for example, the word “wobbled” is written in a wobbly font. I enjoyed this little book, and I recommend it for younger children, especially dog lovers. I noticed the careful attention to detail in this book, and I commend Nicoli Carr for it.
