Princess Dembe was the sole heir to the throne in the Beloved Land. Everyone called her Busingye but her father fondly called her Dembe. The day she was born her father, King Rumba, met the king of the Buganda kingdom and signed a peace agreement between the two kingdoms. King Rumba missed his wife and expected his daughter, Princess Dembe, to be the queen after him. Prince Damian was hellbent on becoming the king, either by marrying the princess or by doing away with her. Trouble came when the king fell sick and the news of his poor health reached the ears of Prince Damian. Will he be able to take over the kingdom? Will Princess Dembe be able to save the kingdom from Prince Damian's attack?
Watch Her Shine by Deborah Henry is an enchanting and whimsical story that highlights the importance of being courageous and strong. It will motivate young readers to tap into their imaginations as well as their inner strength and work in unison with the universe and the animals. It is a good story to introduce children to Mountain Gorillas. The Reading Group Questions at the end of the book are good to use for interactive sessions in classrooms. These will enable students to delve deeply into the story and find out the wisdom contained therein. The story has reality, magic, adventure, and action, and that makes it captivating to young readers. Princess Dembe and her three fairies will remain in the minds of readers even after they close the book.
