How important is one letter? On its own, a letter doesn’t hold much power but add a few other letters and it means so much more. The words you choose can make a big difference … with one word you can make someone happy or make him or her sad or angry. Words is a book about—you guessed it—words! This very short story by author Lora Rozler reminds us how much impact we can have by choosing the right words. Words can convey emotions so that others can understand us and so that we can be understood.
Combining letters to make words is something we all experience when learning to read or write.

In Words, the letter 'e' goes for a stroll in search of meaning and finds itself amongst other letters. Does the letter 'e' want to be in the word hate or in the word love? Which road should it take? Author Lora Rozler has created a book to help children—and parents—choose the right words to express themselves and, at the same time, learn to express their feelings. Are you feeling envious, sad, angry, or hurt? Rozler illustrates the words with different fonts to show how words can be strong, light, negative, fresh, or confident. When words are light, she chooses a thin, light font; when words are demanding or harsh, she chooses a bold font. Words is an effective tool for children learning to read and learning to express their feelings with words. All school and public libraries should put this book on their shelf.

I bought this book several years ago and I read it to my students every year. I refer back to it as the need arises in my class. It is a multi-layered book that can be studied in many ways. At the surface level, we can use it to teach that some words make us feel happy and others make us sad (words as it relates to feelings). On a whole new level, it can be used to broach topics such as acceptance and fitting in, social relationships, bullying (higher level concepts).

Words is a rare book - I highly recommend it!
