Author Biography

From powerful writing to banish bureaucratic blather to crafting powerful resumes, input for personnel reviews, essays for college applications, and more ... Carla D. Bass, Colonel, US Air Force (Ret) covers it all … to rave reviews.

Her battle cries: "Powerful writing changes lives" and "Powerful writing is the lifeblood of effective organizations." She should know!

Writing powerfully characterized her 30-year military career. When 23 years old, she composed and presented daily briefings to the Director, National Security Agency. The rest of her career followed suit, working directly with general officers and ambassadors, composing letters for executive-level signature; elevator speeches; hundreds of personnel appraisals; and nominations for competitive awards.

She now works for the federal government, composing products sent to the White House and Congress. Her secret? “Make each word count and every second of the reader’s time play your advantage.”

Carla once transformed her 480-person unit from the most losing in statewide, professional competitions into the one to beat. How? She taught them to write and subsequently taught writing to thousands of professionals for the next 15 years.

She now offers highly acclaimed workshops tailored for academic, corporate, NGO, and governmental audiences.

Carla delivered workshops to corporate educational programs, the National Intelligence University, and graduate-level classes at George Washington University. She was recently featured on WUSA-9 TV, "Great Day Washington" and Federal News Net radio.

Her postings include Germany, Bulgaria (Defense and Air Attaché – first woman in this position), Korea, and Washington, D.C. For more info, see www.carladbass.com.

I was drawn to Write to Influence! because, as a writer, my goal is always to ''nudge the world a little.'' Though reasonably confident of my own ability, I was curious to see how Carla D. Bass might teach the skill of influential writing. I was impressed! Words are powerful. They can influence, motivate, inspire and entertain. They can drive personal, political and social change. They can drive sales and recruit club members or supporters of a cause; win jobs, promotions, fellowships, scholarships, and grants; sway political opinion and drive social and economic policy and more. As Carla D. Bass says, ''Powerful writing changes lives.'' Sadly, though, too many waste the opportunity to influence, or fail to grasp the basic rules for targeting their audience and eliciting the author's most wanted response. Carla D. Bass lays out those rules with a clear, focused explanation and loads of excellent examples. Relevant and well-chosen exercises allow readers to test their understanding and newfound skills.

Everyone who writes should study Write to Influence! What a joy it would be for employers and grant and scholarship application assessors if every application that crossed their desk was written to influence. How much simpler would it be for shareholders and prospective investors to assess company performance and appreciate achievements if business report writers wrote to influence? How many more sales would brochures, sales letters and marketing web pages achieve if writers all learned the secrets of ''nudging the world'' with influential copy? Carla D. Bass explains in simple language, with relevant analogies, how to sculpt with words; how to set the hook, make the case, and clinch the deal; and how to structure, polish and deliver a work that stands out from the crowd. She shows the job seeker how to make a resume scream ''I'm precisely the employee you are seeking,'' and how to make a sales letter shout ''buy'' so powerfully that even the most resistant won't be able to refuse the offer. Adding a list of references for further reading, she touches on the basics of grammar and punctuation, noting its vital importance.

This isn't a work to read and forget. Write to Influence! is a book to study diligently and reread regularly. It should be your go-to guide for creating a ''well-crafted, hard-hitting, influential message'' that ''tips the scale in your favor.'' Powerful, influential writing is your key to success. Happily, Carla D. Bass makes it easy to acquire the skills to write accurate, clear, concise and focused copy that drives your readers to deliver your most wanted response ... every single time.
