Awakening To Me: One Woman's Journey to Self-Love by Kerri Hummingbird Sami is a non-fiction memoir about Kerri’s life and her struggle with Borderline Personality Disorder. Awakening To Me is a journey of personal transformation and finding peace while dealing with past emotional abuse and mental illness. Kerri starts off her story with details about her past marriage and then takes the reader through her background, dating history, marriage of 20 years and eventual divorce, family history, and sexual abuse in the past. Through this, she explores her own feelings and there is a list of items at the end of each chapter where she advises the reader on the “do’s and don’t’s” of dealing with BPD. The book also explores the various methods that Kerri used to transform herself and find self-love and acceptance via New Age alternative healing practices and Yoga, among other things.
I liked reading Awakening To Me and learning about Kerri’s progress as someone dealing with a serious personality disorder to someone who is a functional and peaceful adult. Her writing style is casual and friendly and feels like a one-on-one conversation at times. I liked that the book highlights what Borderline Personality Disorder is, what causes it, and hopefully helps to alleviate the unfair and unnecessary stigma surrounding it. In fact, the medical community has proposed changing its name to Complex Post Traumatic Disorder because it is a more accurate description of this illness. Overall, this is a book that I would recommend reading.
