Tori Corn takes a growing and serious problem and presents it in an engaging way so that children can understand. Dixie Wants an Allergy is the story of a little girl who, on the first day of school, learns about some of her classmates' allergies. Bridget talks about her wheat allergy and how she gets to order a special meal from restaurants. Charlie had to be rushed to the hospital in an ambulance because of his dairy allergy. Hannah wears a fashionable bracelet because she has a peanut allergy. All of this sounds exciting to Dixie and she races home from school to begin a search for a sign that she's allergic to something. Without spoiling the rest of the story, Corn's prose teaches one to be careful of what one wishes for. The illustrations are colorful and pleasant and really complement the story.

Dixie Wants an Allergy is a good learning tool for those wanting to teach their children about allergies, whether their own child has them or their children have friends with allergies. Peanut allergies have been on the rise substantially over the past few decades and with dairy and other triggers. The book also teaches individuality - that we may want what someone else has, but it's not necessarily good for us. The book reads aloud nicely and conveys some important lessons presented in a way children can understand. The book is geared for ages 3 to 6 and it's a nice book for a pre-school, kindergarten, or elementary school teacher to read to students. I highly recommend this book. The lessons learned are valuable and are taught in a simple manner. I would give it ten stars if I could.
