Oh, wow. Just, wow. That’s exactly what I thought when I finished reading Dust and Ashes by author Al Kalima. So realistic and timely that it could have been ripped out of current day headlines, this book tells the story of nineteen young women who are abducted while traveling on what had, at one time, been a carefully considered, well-traveled and safe route. Now the young women find themselves in incredibly desperate situations, expecting forced marriages, rapes, or even their own deaths to occur at any minute. These girls had been prepared by their families and community for just such an occurrence, but will their past training pay off? And if they do somehow escape, will they be able to survive until they can find their way back to the homes they so desperately hope to see again? You’ll need to read this highly suspenseful and emotional book to find out!

I so enjoyed Dust and Ashes. The author, who, for likely very good reason considering the subject matter that he discusses, uses the pen name of Al Kalima, has done a wonderful job in writing a book that will haunt readers long after they have finished the last page. Anyone with any interest at all in current events of the plight of women in many countries that are being overrun by religious extremists should read this book in order to get a very scary and real picture of what is happening there. Readers will feel a close kinship to the women in the story, and will hope for the very best outcome for them, oftentimes reading with their hearts in their throats. I very highly recommend Dust and Ashes, and I look forward to reading more from the very talented and brave author, Al Kalima, as soon as I possibly can!
