Which breed of cattle produces milk or beef? Do some cattle just work on the farm without producing either? Your child can learn about cattle in Elizabeth Richards’ book H Is for Hereford: A Little Cattleman’s First ABC Book. Yes, Elizabeth teaches the alphabet by using a different breed of cattle for each letter. Each page shows what the breed, such as the Hereford or the Angus, looks like and then informs the child where it originated and how it is used. At the end of the book, Elizabeth adds seven breeds not used in the text. They just have the breed’s name and an illustration. If your child loves animals, teaching them the alphabet with cattle will be great fun for them. I must admit I knew about many cattle breeds, but I learned about those I didn’t know existed as I read this book.

H Is for Hereford is a picture book for children that is also very educational. Your child will learn about 26 cattle breeds as they enjoy the illustrations. Elizabeth Richards has given children a wonderful introduction to different types of cattle. The illustrations are generated by an AI program, making this book very modern. The words used are appropriate for young children just learning to read. You will probably need to help your child pronounce the names of the different breeds. Not only does Elizabeth introduce children to breeds they hear about all the time, such as Wagyu and Holstein, but she also includes many breeds that will be new to your child (probably new to you, too). As a firm believer in education, I also believe in teaching children according to their interests. This will keep the child wanting to learn more. I suggest parents read this book to their child, then allow their child to read it to them. I highly recommend this book as a fun way of learning or reviewing the alphabet.
