As the tale of Never Take a Pirate’s Pearls unfolds, we meet Chester the Pirate, who is characteristically gloomy, but something springs him to action. Directing his ship, the Barnacle, he takes to sea with Roger the Octopus, his trusted first mate. Soon, they encounter a fearsome sea squid. But rather than launching an attack, the squid tosses a bottle on deck containing an alarming message. Chester’s treasured pirate’s pearls, which he believed were safe on Lazy Lagoon, are missing. Immediately, they take off to the scene of the crime —a sojourn that includes a jellyfish bombardment and cannons loaded with sea cucumbers. Arriving at their destination, they realize that the seeming villainy had nothing to do with a wish to acquire wealth. Pearls and shiny clam shells had equal value for their new friend, who became their new shipmate Otter. Chester then received another bottle with a message. Ann D. Borrmann ends the story on a high note. Reading about another plight, Chester did what every good pirate would do whenever asked for help.

When the ship initially embarks within a week, young readers will see what can happen in a single day while looking forward to what tomorrow might bring. Landmarks will be familiar and exciting to recognize. As the Barnacle sails by clusters of islands named after holidays, particularly Merry Christmas Island, filled with welcoming elves and a North Pole-like climate, Ann D. Borrmann subtly details an array of friends and enemies, inviting exploration of the joy in diversity. The only Lazy Lagoon resident is Otter, who has a somewhat confusing obsession with numbers, opening the door to motivate youngsters to learn addition. Tracee Guzman’s vibrant illustrations complement this venturesome adventure. Never Take a Pirate's Pearls makes every facet of this journey leap off the page and into the imaginations of eager young readers.
