Self-isolation is the new norm. It’s hard enough for adults to understand. Imagine how difficult it is for children who want to be outside, playing with friends. How do they manage? Do they call grandparents or other family members regularly to share their daily activities? Do they play doctor or nurse to their stuffed animals to make them feel better? Do they create an ever-changing art gallery to decorate the walls? Do they spend a lot of time reading? Or how about writing their own stories? Or writing letters to others also shut-in and isolated?

Kate Avers’ picture book story, Stuck At Home, tackles a very timely issue that faces us all during this pandemic crisis. A little boy shares his story about what he does while stuck indoors, isolated from the world. He does all the things listed above and more. The story is written in the first person, in simple language so a young reader can easily follow along with the story and perhaps share some ideas of how they spend their days indoors. When you think about it, there really is a lot you can do indoors and this little gem of a book encourages young readers to be creative and devise their own methods of entertainment: reading books, creating art, talking to others outside the house, dancing, marrying the cat and dog. There’s lots to do and lots of laughs to share. The colorful illustrations help carry the plot along and young readers will not only enjoy this book but also improve their reading skills as they read through it. An important story to share with young people at this very difficult time, and very carefully done.
