The Bumblebee Twins Have a Birthday is a picture book written and illustrated by Florence Blanding. Sammy and Sasha, the bumblebee twins, are celebrating their sixth birthday. It starts with chocolate pancakes for breakfast, and then they prepare for the party. Their mother bakes a cake, and they decorate their hive with balloons, banners, and streamers. They hang up a piñata and fill a jar with jellybeans for a game. They set up a gift table, but the gifts are for a children’s shelter. Besides their grandma, they welcome all their guests including ants, ladybugs, grasshoppers, caterpillars, a butterfly, and a snail. Everyone celebrates by dancing, whacking the piñata, guessing how many jellybeans are in the jar, singing Happy Birthday, and eating cake.

In The Bumblebee Twins Have a Birthday, Florence Blanding gives us a delightful picture book that will readily engage and entertain young readers. Who doesn’t get excited at the thought of a birthday party? The narrative is presented in a lilting rhyme that is fun to hear or be read aloud. The accompanying illustrations are colorful and add to the young reader’s enjoyment of the story. I liked the gift table concept in which guests bring gifts to be donated to children in a shelter. It’s an opportunity for the parent or other adult to explain the concepts of generosity, kindness, and compassion. Sammy and Sasha are likable characters with many friends who want to share their special day, and they have thought of everything to make a really fun birthday party.
