The Newbie is written by Roderick J. Robison. The book is filled with lots of emotion and feelings such as sadness, happiness, hopelessness, shame, disappointment, joy, excitement, and awkwardness. As a student approaches a school that they have never attended before, they can become quite nervous and self-conscious. Imagine not only being a new student at a school, but being new to an entire country while attending a new school. Padro experiences this when his father is offered a new job, and moves his family from Brazil to America. Padro is faced with obstacles that most people already living in America never have to think about. Padro is unaware of the customs of America, such as clothing styles, food and drink preferences, and social interests. Making new friends at a new school is hard enough, let alone when being from another country and the likes and dislikes of other children are so different from your own. When Padro joins the soccer team, things begin to change, albeit at a slow pace, but nevertheless, they change.

Roderick J. Robison has created a wonderful story. This story with its characters allows a reader to grasp what it would be like to be a foreign exchange student or a regular student moving permanently to America. As citizens of America, we don't often think of the challenges a foreign student might face attending a new school, beyond the standard challenges of making friends and fitting in. This story highlights the fact that America is very different for most people entering it. A very cute, light hearted story.
