Vacations with Buster, by London Lake Pickett, is about the author’s guide dog, Buster. The book not only introduces to the reader how guide dogs are used, but gives real life applications of how Buster helps the author continue to enjoy life, and even adds another dimension to his life as he talks about the crazy antics that Buster gets himself into when he is “working” on vacation. When the author and Buster go to the beach, Buster discovers how much fun it is to chase birds and the author learned to turn him loose when they go to the beach. They enjoy church retreats in the mountains together, hiking, the desert, and even shopping, and teaching school children about guide dogs. Throughout the book, the author talks about different commands that he has to use because, although Buster is a trained dog, his canine nature often overcomes him and he gets into things or is distracted by things and needs to be corrected.

Vacations with Buster is a very well written book that gives the reader a better look into the life of a blind person and the way that they are able to enjoy life because of the use of a guide dog. It not only looks into the master’s life, but it also takes a look into the life of the dog and how he works, but sometimes is tempted to play as well. It is an excellent teaching tool, to make people better aware of guide dogs and their value in bettering human life. Dog lovers the world over, young and old, will fall in love with Buster.
