An Ill Wind by James P. Hanley is a really good western fiction. As An Ill Wind opens, we find ourselves in Planting, Kansas, and meet Sheriff Luke Atwell. Planting is a typical western town and we are immediately drawn in as we are introduced to Deputy Jesse, Peggy (Atwell’s soon to be wife), and other residents of Planting. Life is quiet and disrupted only by a medicine show passing through town run by a rather dishonest gentleman. However, soon Sheriff Atwell is called to action when a group of renegades arrives, led by Reilly. They are all ex-Confederate men that come through town, trying to stir up trouble mostly against the blacks that are no longer slaves. They attack the home of Abner, his wife and two young sons, killing the older boy and burning their home. Sheriff Atwell, Jesse and Abner find this unacceptable and go after them, along with some other help.

An Ill Wind is the sequel to The Calling but it stood proudly by itself as an excellent book. James P. Hanley is a gifted western author who brought the old west to life. Hanley took me back to the old west and I became part of the story. As I read, I was unaware of my actual surroundings and was truly a part of Planting, Kansas – to me this is what makes a great book and I cannot say enough good things about it, except that An Ill Wind is a MUST-read.
