Emily loves to read. She visits the library regularly and enjoys choosing the right book to take home with her. In Emma Zhou’s Magic Library, Emily visits the library one day to find out that the name of the library has changed to Magic Library. She wonders why when everything inside is the same as always. However, there is one book jumping up and down on the shelf, begging her to choose it. She does and discovers a dog named Scuby. She’d always wanted her own dog, so when she checks out the book and takes it home, Emily is delighted to have Scuby jump off the pages of the book and become her playmate for as long as she has borrowed the book from the Magic Library. It’s a sad day when the book has to be returned.

Emma Zhou’s picture book, Magic Library, brings the real magic of books alive for young readers to enjoy. The plot follows young Emily, a young blue bunny, as she enjoys one particularly, and very magical book, about a dog named Scuby. There is a plot within a plot here, which is very cleverly constructed. The two characters, Emily and Scuby, are well-developed and their bonding is more than just magical. The language is simple so young readers can easily follow along and the illustrations are bright and colorful and add another dimension to the story. This young author is amazing in her ability to bring this story to life and to promote important themes like family, friends, kindness, and, yes, magic. I can’t wait to read more stories written by this very talented young lady.
